STAND UP! Feminist Avant-Garde. Works from the VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna is an internationally acclaimed exhibition, on view at the Sprengel Museum Hannover from July 5 to September 28, 2025. It brings together pioneering feminist voices of the 1970s, with all works drawn from the collection in Vienna.
The approximately 200 works by 42 artists on display include pieces by major women artists such as VALIE EXPORT, ORLAN, Martha Rosler, Ulrike Rosenbach, Renate Bertlmann, Birgit Jürgenssen, Annegret Soltau, Cindy Sherman, Judy Chicago, and Penny Slinger, alongside many others yet to be discovered. The works—photographs, video pieces, objects, and drawings—examine the construction of femininity, explore what it meant to be a woman in the 1970s, and debunk stereotypes and clichés. For the first time in the history of art, the artists of the Feminist Avant-Garde created a completely new “image of woman” from a female perspective in a radical, subversive, and ironic way. In 2025, the themes of this movement of women artists remain highly relevant.
