The city of Novi Sad (Serbia) is honoured this year as European Capital of Culture. In May and June 2022, Novi Sad is given over entirely to "Heroines" and presents the exhibition "Feministicka Avangarda 1970-ih" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina. The exhibition is the 13th stop of the Feminist Avant-Garde.
The artists were indeed heroines. For the first time in the history of art, they created a new image of the woman from a female perspective. For this they used new forms of expression like photography, film, video and performances. Gabriele Schor, founding director of the VERBUND COLLECTION, coined the term "Feminist Avant-Garde" to fittingly honour the pioneering work done by these female artists.
