From 24 September 2021 to 9 January 2022, the Lentos Art Museum Linz will be showing the exhibition FEMINIST AVANT-GARDE of the 1970s from the VERBUND COLLECTION.
The Linz show presents by 200 works by 82 artists. For the first time, the touring exhibition in Austria is hosted outside Vienna in one of the most renowned museums in Upper Austria’s regional capital. The exhibition emphasises the pioneering work of the "Feminist avant-garde". Irony was used as a weapon against the patriarchy. The “private” was politicised. The exhibition can be seen in this setting for the first time in Austria outside Vienna.

The exhibition took place from 24 September 2021 - 9 January 2022 at the Lentos Kunstmuseum in Linz.
The Lentos shows with over 200 artworks from the Viennese VERBUND COLLECTION how 82 artists explored the construct of the female in the 1970s. The exhibition emphasises the pioneering work of the "Feminist avant-garde". The term was coined by founding director Gabriele Schor in order to expand the canon of art. For the first time in the history of art, many female artists in Europe and the USA depicted the suppression of women. In doing so, they used their own body as a social sign. They denounced the reduction to the role of mother, housewife and spouse, visualised being shut in, female sexuality, the diktat of beauty, and covered a large number of female identities. It is amazing how formally similar strategies arose, although the artists never knew each other.
