The exhibition presents early works by Cindy Sherman from the VERBUND COLLECTION, with which the artist discovered the game of transformation as her artistic maxim. The show includes photographs from her student days as well as her iconic series Untitled Film Stills, which led to her international breakthrough in the late 1970s. Cindy Sherman - Early Works 1975-1980 was developed as a collaboration between FOMU Antwerp and Gabriele Schor, founding director of the VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna.

Parallel to our exhibition, the show Cindy Sherman Anti-Fashion will be on display at FOMU. Both are part of the year-long ENSOR 2024 programme to mark the 75th anniversary of James Ensor's death. Like Ensor, Sherman also expresses her critical attitude towards social conventions through masks and disguises.
